On December 12, the Swedish Riksdag organized a seminar with Nobel Laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege. The seminar centered on how effectively to prevent sexual violence in armed conflict and to support victims of the violence.

Participants included the Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén, Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström, and Ambassador-at-large for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Annika Ben David. In her remarks, Dr. Angela Muvumba-Sellström, from the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, emphasized the usefulness of drawing on research in order to design effective preventive action. We can learn much from the fact that there is great variation in the behavior of armed actors, including those operating in the same conflict area. There is a need to broaden our focus to include lessons from those military organizations that are effective in preventing their soldiers from conducting this form of crime rather than only building policy on lessons from organizations guilty of extreme forms of violence.

Dr. Muvumba-Sellström leads the research project Disciplining Fighters: Understanding Armed Political Actors’ Control of Sexual Violence which is part of the Department’s longstanding and strong empirical research profile on gender, peace, and security.
