Research assistant, UCDP and Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) at Uppsala University is the world's leading provider of data on organized violence, and the program is a unique source of information about conflicts worldwide and has been at the Department since the 1980s.

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research and UCDP is now looking for a full-time research assistant for the period 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2022.

Tasks: The tasks consist of collecting and coding information on organized violence from selected, mainly Spanish-speaking, sources into the UCDP database, with a special focus on Latin America, especially Central America, and the Caribbean. Text writing in English will also be included in the tasks. The work follows the fixed coding rules and conceptualizations of the UCDP, and is made in a small group, where a high degree of independent analytical capacity is expected. Other tasks may also be included depending on UCDP needs.

Required qualifications:

  • Masters’ degree in peace and conflict studies
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Good knowledge of organized violence in Latin America, especially Central America, and the Caribbean
  • Documented experience of working with conflict data (coding/data management)
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Very good Spanish in speech and writing
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to work independently
  • Good ability to collaborate

Meriting:

  • Experience of coding organized violence, especially Central America and the Caribbean

Individual suitability will be strongly considered.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 1 April 2021, or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position ending 31 March 2022 (12 months).

Scope of employment: 100 %.
