In a new blog post in The Washington Post’s Monkey Cage, Håvard Hegre, Lisa Hultman, and Håvard Mokleiv Nygård (PRIO), shows that UN peacekeeping really can be effective.

The authors argue that peacekeeping operations are surprisingly effective at keeping the peace, provided that they are adequately funded. Simulations have shown that if the UN had deployed peacekeeping operations with robust mandates and budgets, the number of armed conflicts could have been drastically reduced. Even though such operations are costly, they are still cost-effective given the enormous costs of large-scale armed conflicts.
