Afaf Doleeb awarded the Martin H:son Holmdahl’s Award
2019-11-20

The Department congratulates master student and Rotary Peace Fellow Afaf Doleeb for being awarded the Martin H:Son Holmdahl Prize. The prize is Uppsala University’s foremost award for efforts to promote human rights and freedoms.
Afaf Doleeb is being recognized for her commitment to the peaceful development in Sudan. Afaf is from Sudan and studies at the Department as a master student and also as Rotary Peace Fellow, hosted by the Uppsala Rotary Peace Center. She has been active in the peaceful protests that took place in Sudan, her home country, in 2019 when Sudan’s dictator was ousted in April and a power-sharing agreement was signed between the military and the pro-democracy movement in August. Afaf has been involved in the pro-democracy movement both in Sudan and from Sweden and has consistently worked to ensure a peaceful transition based on human rights and the rule of law. Recently, Afaf, together with others, created a special Facebook group that actively monitors the new government’s compliance with the August agreement.
Afaf Doleeb shares the award with Assistant Professor Patricia Lorenzoni at the Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies on Racism at Uppsala University. She focuses on colonialism and racism, being interested in the indigenous populations of the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil as well as in the rights of asylum seekers in Sweden.
