We highly recommend two recent publications by Professor William Zartman, honorary doctor at Uppsala University and member of our project’s advisory board:

In “What do you do if they won’t negotiate?”, he provides an analysis of options available to political decision-makers and mediators if faced with armed actors that refuse to enter peace negotiations. “Last Lectures on the Prevention and Intervention of Genocide”, edited by Samuel Totten, is a collection of hypothetical ‘last lectures’ by some of the world’s top scholars and practitioners in the fields of human rights and genocide studies. Professor Zartman has contributed to this fascinating book through a piece on the prevention of deadly conflict (https://www.routledge.com/Last-Lectures-on-…/…/9781138221673).

Moreover, an upcoming book (“The Ecology of Violent Extremism”; edited by Lisa Schirch, 2019) will contain a chapter written by Professor Zartman with the title “Negotiation and Violent Extremism: Why Engage and Why Not?”.
